Varicose Veins – Symptoms, Causes and Effective Treatment

One third of all people experience symptoms of varicose veins . However, treatment of varicose veins is today simple, effective and without major discomfort or pain.

Varicose veins are a relatively harmless vein disease that affects a large part of the population. Although the disease does not necessarily hinder normal daily life, many people still choose to receive treatment for varicose veins due to cosmetic consequences. Symptoms are most common in women aged 30-50 (about twice as many women as men are affected). Varicose veins occur if the pressure in the veins, which carry blood from the tissue to the heart, becomes too great, and the vein walls are weak at the same time.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

The typical and most visible symptoms of varicose veins are that the veins in the legs swell and become visible. Early symptoms may also include:

  • Mild pain in the areas around the swollen veins
  • Calf cramps and restlessness in the legs
  • Tired calf muscles
  • The sting

Varicose veins develop very slowly. However, if left untreated, more serious symptoms can develop, such as:

  • Hard and discolored skin
  • Shin wound
  • Itchy skin and eczema
  • Bleeding from varicose veins

Note: Varicose veins are a sign of venous insufficiency. Without treatment , blood transport in the body can be hindered. In rare cases, this can contribute to more serious cardiovascular diseases.

The Most Effective Treatment for Varicose Veins

Symptoms of varicose veins can be treated relatively easily. In mild cases, treatment with compression bandages or support stockings is often the only option. In more advanced cases, or when cosmetic reasons are the driving force, surgery is the option.

At Kirurgen.dk we primarily use laser treatment of varicose veins for symptoms of venous insufficiency. We prefer laser treatment of varicose veins as this method is largely painless and involves minimal complications and a short recovery time.
