Sebaceous cyst removal (atheroma)
A sebaceous cyst (atheroma or epidermoid cyst) is a benign lump under the skin filled with sebaceous content. We remove it surgically together with its capsule to prevent recurrence.
What is a sebaceous cyst?
A closed cyst usually formed from a blocked sebaceous gland. It presents as a soft lump under the skin, sometimes with a central black dot (the opening). Most common on the scalp, face, neck and back.
When should it be removed?
- Continued growth.
- Recurrent inflammation or abscesses.
- Discomfort or pressure.
- Cosmetic reasons.
- Location prone to rubbing.
How do we remove it?
The most important point is to excise the entire capsule – any remnant means the cyst will return. We remove it under local anaesthesia through a small elliptical incision, taking out the cyst with its full wall. The wound is closed with sutures. The procedure takes 20–30 minutes.
Inflamed cyst or abscess
If the cyst is acutely inflamed (red, painful, swollen) we usually drain the pus first and perform full removal after 6–8 weeks once the inflammation has settled. Removal in the acute phase leaves a bigger scar and a higher recurrence risk.
After removal
Wounds heal within 7–14 days. Sutures are removed according to location. Tissue is always sent for histology.
