Removing varicose veins today is an ambulatory procedure under local anaesthesia. We use the same minimally invasive techniques as the leading vascular surgery departments – endovenous laser (EVLA/EVLT), foam sclerotherapy and microphlebectomy – and combine them as needed for a durable, cosmetically appealing result.
Which method is best for removing varicose veins?
The right choice depends on the size and location of the vein and how leaky the valves are. The duplex ultrasound scan determines whether we should close the diseased truncal vein with laser, treat smaller branches with foam, or remove visible varices through tiny incisions.
Endovenous laser (EVLA/EVLT) – first line for large veins
A thin laser fibre is advanced under ultrasound guidance and seals the diseased vein from within. Over 95% effective at 5 years, no visible scars, and you go home the same day. Ideal for the great and small saphenous veins.
Microphlebectomy – visible veins removed through 1–2 mm punctures
Tortuous, bulging veins just under the skin are pulled out with a small hook through 1–2 mm punctures. No stitches needed, immediate cosmetic improvement, performed under local anaesthesia and often combined with laser in the same session.
Foam sclerotherapy – for smaller veins and spider veins
Medical foam is injected to close and shrink the vein. Used for smaller tortuous veins and as a supplement after laser ablation.
What does removal of varicose veins cost?

- Self-payer – classic surgical removal: DKK 8,000 per leg.

What a typical treatment pathway looks like

Do varicose veins return after they are removed?+
The treated vein will not return. However, new varicose veins may appear in other veins over time, especially with a hereditary predisposition. A follow-up scan after 4–6 weeks ensures a good result.
Will I have scars after removing varicose veins?+
No, not visible ones. Laser treatment leaves only a small 2 mm puncture, and microphlebectomy is performed through 1–2 mm punctures that heal without stitches and without visible scars.
