Endoscopy is often used when gastrointestinal symptoms need investigating, because, when clinically relevant, tissue samples can be taken and selected polyps removed; not all lesions can or should be treated in the same session. A colonoscopy assesses the large bowel for polyps, inflammation and tumours, and how much of it can be assessed depends on the bowel preparation and how the examination goes; a gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.
